Why This Knob Breaks

It is a small plastic knob pressed onto a thin metal lever that gets pushed and pulled through its full travel every time the mixer runs. The plastic splits at the socket and the knob falls off, leaving a bare lever that still works but is awkward and sharp to operate. Nothing electrical has failed at that point.

The catch is that KitchenAid does not sell this knob as a separate part. The official repair is the complete speed control assembly, which typically runs $75 or more — for a broken plastic knob. That is the entire reason this part exists.
