Why This Latch Breaks

The canister lid latch gets flexed open and closed every time the canister is emptied, and that repeated snap-fit flexing is exactly where a thin molded-plastic latch eventually cracks. Once it goes, the lid won't stay sealed on the canister, which takes an otherwise working shop vac out of service over a part that costs pennies to print. Shop-Vac doesn't sell this latch cheaply on its own — the OEM latch alone runs $16+, and most "repair kit" bundles throw in parts you don't need just to get the one clip.
