Why Enamel Chips in Storage

Enamel is glass fused to cast iron. It is hard, and it is brittle at an edge. A lid sitting directly on the pot rim puts one glass edge against another, carrying the full weight of the lid, and every time the pot is slid across a shelf or lifted down off one those two edges grind together. That is where the chips start — on the rim and the underside of the lid, the two places you cannot repair.

Le Creuset ships little plastic bumpers with a new pot for exactly this reason. They are also easy to lose, and buying replacements from the original source is wildly out of proportion to what they are: a few grams of moulded plastic.

Compatible Models

Le Creuset enameled cast iron Dutch ovens and casseroles. The clip works off the rim rather than the pot diameter, so it is not tied to one pot size — a 4.0 mm rim is a 4.0 mm rim whether the pot is 3 quarts or 9. Staub, Lodge and other enameled cast iron often fit too, and the 4.0 mm figure above lets you check rather than guess: measure the rim, and if it comes in at or under 4 mm these will work regardless of the badge on the pot.
