Why This Cap Goes Missing
The link port cap is a small friction-fit cover over the EXT connector on the right side of the console — the port used for the link cable. It is not tethered to anything. On a console that is now well over thirty years old, it is almost always the first piece to disappear: popped off to plug in a link cable during a trade or a match of Tetris, set down, and never seen again. Surviving original caps have usually gone brittle or yellowed, and the retaining tabs snap the moment you flex them. Without a cap the open port collects pocket lint and dust, which is exactly what you do not want sitting against the contacts of a console you are trying to preserve.
