Why These Break

The catch clip is the one part of a stacking case that is worked every time boxes are joined or split apart, and it is thin plastic holding a loaded case to the one beneath it. Cold makes it brittle, and a dropped stack finishes it. Once a clip goes the case will not latch to its neighbour, which is the entire point of a stacking system — and a perfectly sound box becomes a loose one.
