Why This Knob Breaks

The bump knob is what strikes the ground to advance the trimmer line, so it absorbs the repeated ground contact that the rest of the head is shielded from — over time the threads or the knob face crack or strip. Craftsman/MTD doesn't sell this knob on its own; the only OEM fix is the full head-assembly kit, which costs far more than just replacing the worn knob.
